COURSE NAME: Dental Anatomy

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND PHILOSOPHY
This course provides didactic instruction and laboratory exercises for advanced operative procedures. It will provide the students with a thorough understanding of the morphology (form) and physiology (function) of the primary and permanent dentitions. Upon completion of this course the students will have sufficient knowledge to continue onto EFDA 210 and EFDA 212.
II. COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the course, the student will:
  1. Identify and correctly utilize dental terminology.
  2. Explain the location, composition, structure and clinical importance of the tooth enamel, dentin, pulp, cementum, periodontal ligament, bone, and alveolar process.
  3. Identify each tooth and its landmarks.
  4. Identify the dental arches and quadrants.
III. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES AND COURSE OUTLINE

  2. Dental Terminology and Orientation to the Oral Cavity Identify and discuss:
    • dental arches and quadrants
    • types of teeth
    • parts of the teeth
    • surfaces of the teeth
    • landmarks on the teeth
    • tooth numbering system
    • teeth in the permanent and primary dentition
  3. The tooth: Upon completion of this lesson the student will:
    • describe tooth design and preventive curvature
    • identify and describe the tissues of the teeth
    • discuss the landmarks of the teeth
  4. The Periodontium: Upon completion of this lesson the student will:
    • identify and describe the tissues of the periodontium
    • state the function of the periodontal tissues
    • identify the structures of the oral cavity
  5. Individual teeth and occlusion: Upon completion of this lesson the student will:
    • identify the landmarks of the individual teeth of permanent dentition
    • identify the teeth in the primary dentition
    • compare the primary dentition to the permanent dentition
    • by listing differences and similarities
    • discuss dentition as a working unit--occlusion alignment
    • describe Angles Classification of Occlusion
    • differentiate between overbite, overjet, and open bite
IV. STUDENT ACTIVITIES
  1. Class discussion and participation.
  2. Homework will be passed out in class and is due at the next class meeting unless specified by the instructor.
  3. Observe oral cavity structures using an intraoral camera.
  4. Tooth carvings – carve from wax and identify landmarks.
V. METHOD OF EVALUATION
The students' final grade will be based upon the following:
  1. Final Exam 80%
  2. Tooth carvings and class participation 20%

  3. Audio-visual: slides, transparencies, models, whiteboard
  4. Student participation in demonstration
