Engineering & Architectural Design

Program Description
The Engineering and Architectural Design Program teaches students the graphic language basic to all forms of engineering, architecture and design. The program provides an essential background and early opportunity for students to explore a challenging and rewarding career field prior to college.

The program is based on an individual approach. A student may enter the program on a one- or two-year basis; flex scheduling is accommodated.

Students must be enrolled concurrently in a math and science course while taking this program. (Algebra II, Pre Calculus, Chemistry, Conceptual Physics or Physics.)By graduation time, students should successfully complete Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre Calculus, Chemistry and Physics as a minimum requirement for any two- or four-year college.

Various blocks of class time are available during the school day to accommodate student academic schedules.

Curriculum Components
Technical Drafting
In this course, students progress through a series of drafting problems which provide them with a sound foundation in the methods and techniques used in various drafting and design applications. Orthographic, isometric, sectioning, perspectives, schematics, developments and many other types of graphics will be covered. Computers with AUTOCAD software will be used to solve and draw many of these problems. Multimedia portfolios will also be produced using Microsoft Office applications.Recommendation: Algebra I, Geometry

Design
After completion of technical drafting, the student may enter the design area in which he/she wishes to concentrate - Mechanical Design or Architectural Design.

Mechanical Design
Provides students with experiences in advanced detail drafting, assembled mechanisms, precision measuring, fixture design, CNC computer numerical control programming and injection mold designs and development. Design, building and testing of structural models will be covered along with interdisciplinary projects with Physics courses. Work in this course is done entirely on the computer with AUTOCAD and Solidworks 3-D modeling software.

Architectural Design
Covers residential buildings. Topics include styles, construction, design of floor plans, elevations, foundations, electrical, plumbing, heating, kitchens, lot and plot plans. Students will be involved in the actual design of buildings that will be built. Work in this course is done entirely on the computer with AUTOCAD and other software.

Postsecondary Credits or Professional Certification Credentials Offered
The Center for Technology's Technical Drafting Program is recommended by UVM to all students considering engineering careers. Students considering VTC in mechanical engineering may also get credit waivers depending on the degree of success in the program.

All students at the Center for Technology may seek eligibility for enrollment in a variety of college level courses offered through Champlain College, University of Vermont and the Community College of Vermont. Each course can earn a student three college credits - many of which are accepted by other colleges and universities. Motivated students who take advantage of these advanced placement programs can acquire a full semester toward their college degree.

• Four Elective Credits

What's Next?
Students completing this program who are interested in pursuing a career in a related field must enroll in a two-, four- or five-year college programs offered by Vermont Technical College, University of Vermont, University of New Hampshire, Wentworth, Northwestern, Clarkson, RPI, UNC, Georgia Tech, Penn State, and others. (These colleges represent a partial list of where recent graduates of this program have attended.)
