Program Description
The Dental Assisting Program is accredited by the American Dental Association. This challenging career, demanding versatility and a willingness to assume responsibilities for many diverse tasks, is attractive to students who are strong in science and want to work with people. It includes a variety of learning experiences that incorporate essential worker traits into the curriculum. The curriculum sequence presents theory first then guided practical applications. Externship and field placements provide practical experience and on-the-job-training in dental offices. These practical experiences are vital in developing a sense of initiative and responsibility and are a required component of the curriculum.

Postsecondary Credits or Professional Certification Credentials Offered
Students who successfully complete the Dental Assisting Program have the opportunity to earn postsecondary credit. Students who are eligible may take one college course per semester while enrolled at CTE. This enables a student to earn 3-9 college credits (including summer session) at UVM, VT Tech, CCV or Champlain College.

Career Academy Opportunity and Rewards
All students at the Center for Technology may seek eligibility for enrollment in a variety of college level courses offered through Champlain College, University of Vermont and the Community College of Vermont. Each course can earn a student three college credits - many of which are accepted by other colleges and universities. Motivated students who take advantage of these advanced placement programs can acquire a full semester toward their college degree.

What's Next?
Upon successful completion of this program, students earn certification in CPR/AED. They also attain professional endorsement in Vermont for taking dental radiographs. Qualifying graduates are eligible to sit for the Dental Assisting National Board examination to become Certified Dental Assistants. Students interested in pursuing a career in a related field may seek employment as a dental assistant or enroll in a course of study to become an Expanded Functions Dental Assistant. Some students continue their education and pursue a career in dental hygiene or dentistry.

Industry Partners
Over 50 dental offices statewide are internship sites for students in this program. Students become members of the American Dental Assistants Association.
